California's economy relies on a vast water delivery network. However, that water delivery system is outdated and in need of modernization. With support from The Natural Resources Defense Council, we conducted a study on how to modernize California's agricultural water delivery network and prepare it for a net-zero future.
The Challenge
California's agricultural water delivery infrastructure is the state's single largest electricity consumer. Built largely in the mid-20th century, the system was designed for a different climate, a different agricultural landscape, and a different energy grid. As California pursues its ambitious climate goals, modernizing this infrastructure is not optional — it's essential.
Our Approach
We conducted comprehensive research examining the current state of California's water delivery infrastructure, identifying modernization opportunities that could simultaneously reduce energy consumption, improve water efficiency, and support the state's transition to net-zero emissions. The study analyzed technological, policy, and economic dimensions of infrastructure modernization.
Impact
This research provides a roadmap for one of the most impactful infrastructure modernization efforts California can undertake — addressing water security, energy efficiency, and climate goals simultaneously.
